You’re walking down the streets of New York and something catches your eye. It’s a piano, brightly painted with a note simply stating: “Play Me, I’m Yours.” That’s the simple, beautiful idea behind Sing for Hope as they launch this project placing pianos in the streets with art by Luke Jerram.
Sing for Hope is an organization that gives professional artists the opportunity to give back and create positive change in their communities. Started by opera singers who say they wanted to ‘lift their voices for social change’, the organization now boasts an impressive roster of more than 600 professional artists. Their central vision of uniting artists and communities by providing live art to urban centers is on perfect display with Play Me, I’m Yours. Alicia Keys had this to say:
“I believe in the creative potential of New York City, and I applaud Sing for Hope for everything it does to develop that potential. This summer, Sing for Hope will create a beautiful and worthy moment for our city by bringing the Play Me, I’m Yours “street pianos” to our city’s parks and public spaces. It’s things like this that make me extra proud to be a New Yorker, and the endless possibilities represented in these streets.”
From 9 am until 10 pm each day 60 pianos have been available for people to discover and play since June 21st. Each piano has a buddy, a volunteer who is responsible for the instrument. These buddies are from local schools, hospital and other community organizations. After this summer, the pianos will be donated to their buddy organizations to be enjoyed for years to come. On July 5th, Play Me, I’m Yours will wrap up with a grand finale at the Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. This event is completely free and will feature several of the ridiculously talented artists from the Sing for Hope roster.
