8 simple Ways to make a difference on Earth Day

Tomorrow (4-22-11) is Earth Day! Here’s a short list of some simple things you can do to help reduce our carbon footprint on our earth.

1. Pledge an act of green at earthday.org.
-They are looking for 1 billion pledges, lets help them out!

2. Bring your own bag to the grocery store.
– Most personal shopping bags hold 3 times the amount of products a conventional plastic bag holds. Hey that’s less for you to carry and less plastic thrown away.

3. Stop buying bottled water.
– If a 20oz bottle of water costs $1.25 = $.16 an ounce. Gasoline costs $3.75 a gal = ~$.03 an ounce. Yes, you read that right, you pay more for bottled water than you do for gasoline.
– Instead, buy several Nalgene or aluminum bottles and keep them in the fridge filled with filtered water. Grab them when you’re in a hurry.
– If you stop using bottled water you will help reduce the amount of plastic/fossil fuels used on our planet.

4. Use cloth napkins at the dinner table.
– Paper napkins are the most popular way to keep yourself tidy during dinner. Thousands of square feet of paper are used in the US on paper napkins alone.
– Buy enough cloth napkins for everyone in your family for a week. Toss the used ones in with your laundry. Save money, paper and feel fancy at dinner every night!

5. Unplug your cell phone chargers
– Cell phone, laptop and other transformer chargers continue to use electricity even after you unplug the object you were charging. The easiest solution is to put all your chargers on a surge protector and switch all of them off when they are not in use.

6. Purchase a tree or tree sapling and plant it
– plant it in your back yard or at a local lot (with permission of course)
– check out the Arbor Day website, if you become a member they will send you 10 free trees and plant 10 trees at a national park in your honor.
– visit Lowes on the 23rd, they are giving away 1 million free trees to their customers. More information here.

7. Take a break from Facebook.
– This guy figured out that 500 millon Facebook users generate 4.2 Million metric tons of carbon waste every year from spending time on their favorite social networking site. Take a day off from facebook and reduce your footprint.

8. Bring your favorite mug to the coffee shop
– Keeps Starbucks from using another one of their paper cups. Most places offer a discount to customers that bring their own cups.

Check back tomorrow and we’ll have even more simple ways to be earth friendly!
